Italy and Slovenia already met at the Cornacchia World Cup final in 2014

Italy just managed to win the European championship 2021 in both men’s and women’s categories. In 2014, for the first time, a Club succeded in such an exploit also at the Cornacchia World Cup: it was the National team of Slovenia. And incredibly enough both men’s finals were between Slovenia and Italy! The final of Cornacchia World Cup 2014 was decided at the tie-break after a hard-fought match (25-20, 20-25, 25-27, 25-23, 12-15), as well as the CEV final 2021. Luckly for Italy, this time Sbertoli and Piccinelli got the better of Kozamernik and Štern, all on the pitch in both finals.

11 out of 14 players of the Italian National team champion of Europe played at Cornacchia World Cup

The Italian captain Simone Giannelli just won the MVP of the European final 2021, while in 2012 he won the Cornacchia tournament as best setter, together with Fabio Balaso, best Libero in the same edition. But also Simone Anzani, Alessandro Michieletto, Daniele Lavia, Alessandro Piccinelli, Giulio Pinali, Francesco Recine, Lorenzo Cortesia, Riccardo Sbertoli and Mattia Bottolo participated at the volleyball tournament of Pordenone. That means that 11 out of 14 players of the Italian National team champion of Europe played at Cornacchia World Cup.

The new European champions have almost all passed through Pordenone

The new European champions have almost all passed through Pordenone. We have seen them grow, become great and now win. We hope this is just the beginning for the team that managed to win the European Championship as the youngest in the competition. One thing is certain, both as regards the evolution of Slovenia and for this generation of great Italian champions: we had already done the dress rehearsals at the Cornacchia tournament.
